In dental anatomy, the space between adjacent teeth is described by the interproximal region. This term refers to the area between the proximal surfaces of two neighboring teeth—the surfaces that face each other. The interproximal space is the specific gap created by those facing surfaces, including the contact area and the gingival papilla that fills the embrasure. Interproximal is the precise term for this between-teeth space, which is why it’s the best choice. Distal and mesial are directional terms describing location along the dental arch (toward the back of the mouth and toward the midline, respectively) and don’t name the space itself. Interdental is related but describes the general area between teeth, while interproximal targets the actual space between the proximal surfaces.
